Custom products, exquisite finishes and luxury details helped earn this kitchen by Steven Cooper of Cooper Pacific Kitchens in West Hollywood, CA the top honor in this highend category. The 550-sq.-ft. space in Bel Air, CA – which included a kitchen, butler’s pantry and food pantry – required a structural redesign as well as entirely new products and finishes in order to project the French Art Deco-inspired kitchen theme the clients desired.

Dividing walls at the islands were removed to give the space a more open, welcoming feel, and differing ceiling heights were adjusted to provide a more cohesive look. Since the ceiling in the adjoining breakfast nook could not be changed due to structural elements, Cooper created a tray ceiling to improve the transition from area to area.

In keeping with the formal and refined elements of the home, Cooper chose a variety of luxury materials for use throughout the space. Transitional custom cabinetry from Premier Custom Built is finished in white along the perimeter, with shagreen leather at the drawer heads and antique mirrored doors on the upper cabinets. Brass trim surrounds the drawers, coordinating with the Shearron custom antique brass knobs and pulls from Wilmette Hardware.

The brass trim continues on the island, providing a dramatic contrast with the cabinets’ rich black finish. Shagreen leather is showcased here at the island posts. The island also sports
a Franke sink and Miele Futura integrated dishwasher, with an integrated refrigerator and freezer from Miele located on the facing wall.

Brilliant Black with a custom brass trim was the choice for the La Cornue Chateau 165 range, which is backed by a pale stone backsplash that coordinates with the Cristallo natural
quartzite countertops featured throughout. A Wolf microwave oven and Sub-Zero undercounter refrigerator are also included in the design.

Tying the classic black and white design together is the diamond- pattern flooring, which features honed Avenza marble as well as polished Calacatta Pacifica marble.

Design Firm Reaches for the Stars

When a Midwestern family design firm moved to Hollywood, it would’ve been easy to become star-struck; instead, the firm honed its luxury design skills, and 30 years later, business is booming with an average project cost of $175,000.

WEST HOLLYWOOD, CA — For many designers, remodeling a celebrity’s kitchen would be the highlight of their career. For Steven Cooper, owner and principal designer at West Hollywood, CA-based Cooper Pacific Kitchens, designing a famous person’s kitchen is just another day at the office.

“There have been a lot of A-list Hollywood celebrities that we’ve worked with,” says Cooper, “as well as a lot of athletes and a few politicians along the way – certainly names that everyone out there would recognize. That’s kind of part and parcel with being located in Los Angeles.”

JOURNEY OUT WEST
While many people come to Hollywood to chase dreams of movie stardom, Steven Cooper’s father, Neil Cooper, came to California to realize his dreams of kitchen design. The Coopers were living in southern Minnesota, where Neil was a custom home builder. His favorite room in the house was always the kitchen, so he decided that Los Angeles was the place to start a business focusing on luxury high-end kitchen design. Neil, his wife Shirley, and their two sons packed up, went west in 1984, and established their business at the renowned Pacific Design Center in 1986.

The move was well worth it: Today, the cost of Cooper Pacific Kitchens’ average kitchen remodel is between $175,000 and $200,000.

“We operate in one of the best markets in the nation,” states Steven. “It’s a nice place for us to be in – Los Angeles. We have an abundance of amazing properties we’re able to work in.”

FAMILY ENTERPRISE
Since the beginning, Cooper Pacific Kitchens has been a family enterprise. Steven’s mother worked in various managerial positions at the business and was the “glue that held everything together.” His father was owner and principal designer until 18 months ago when he retired. Steven began working for his dad at the age of 15, doing accounting and eventually moving on to design.

The rest of the family also currently works at the firm. Steven’s wife, Giselle, is the showroom concierge and brand curator; Steven’s oldest daughter, Brittanie, manages installations and logistics, while his daughter Natalie assists Steven with client management and showroom resources.

“The current family structure that’s involved is a very important part of our DNA,” adds Steven.

Although Cooper Pacific Kitchens left full home building behind in Minnesota, the firm still has its contractor’s license and provides its own installation services.

“At the end of the day, a kitchen’s not a kitchen until it is professionally installed,” says Steven. “Otherwise, it’s a pile of cabinets in someone’s garage and you’re left to hope that someone else executes your vision properly. I don’t like leaving things to hope.”

STAND OUT PROJECT
A project that stands out for Steven is a large property he is currently working on in Las Vegas. It is a project that has expanded in size: The scope has moved from one end of the house to the other over a four-year period.

In addition to the 500-sq.-ft kitchen, Cooper Pacific is also doing a 900-sq.-ft. parlor bar and the 2,500-sq.-ft. master suite. The part of the project that is most memorable for Steven is a handmade millwork piece he is fashioning for the parlor bar.

“It’s a combination of a very modern flat-panel island with a hand-carved piece that grows from the end of it,” he describes. “It’s this dysmorphic island piece that goes from French provincial to sleek, modern Italian – all within the same piece.”

STYLE AGNOSTIC
Many firms tout a design specialty. However, Cooper Pacific prides itself on the fact that it offers a wide range of design styles.

“I think where we make a departure from other firms is we are not locked into a particular design scheme or school,” expounds Steven. “Our breadth and width are such that we are doing European modern, American traditional, modern farmhouse, French Deco – you name it, we’re doing it. We’re able to reach into our wheelhouse of resources here and execute any of those visions.”

Another fact that sets Cooper Pacific apart is that about 75% of the firm’s clients tend to be other design professionals who come in looking for collaborative work.

“A designer can come into us and may have a traditional project now, maybe a transitional one in six months, maybe a modern one next year, or all at the same time. They know they can come to us as a resource for any particular style and have consistency in terms of execution,” concludes Steven.

Headed to press!

We are excited to be headed to press with our new book.   It's been a fun although lengthy process to put this together.   It feels so good to have it wrapped and running through the presses.   To the chagrin of my team, I'm already thinking about the next edition.   Isn't that the life of design though?   We are constantly moving from one project to the next and while the completion feels fantastic, I'm always excited for what's coming up next.

As we edit and assemble the various projects we wished to feature, I'm reminded of each client that we had the pleasure of working with.  It's very rewarding to bring these concepts to life, to create solutions for their lives that make their time at home intrinsically more rewarding.  Thank you to each of you for the trust and enthusiasm you brought to the project.

And to the team who tirelessly worked with me on this - you are the best.  Love you guys.

Coffee Cravings? Get Your Fix With These Tips from the Kitchen Design Pros at Cooper Pacific

True coffee connoisseurs know that the best coffee depends on three important factors: delicious beans, fresh, filtered water and an excellent coffee maker. Whether you’re a coffee purist or just need your two cups of joe to get your morning going, here’s the buzz you need before you make a decision on an in-home coffee machine.

Cooper Pacific Kitchens CEO, Steven Cooper, shares his favorite built-in coffee maker brands to help you get your java on in your new kitchen.

Miele

Not only is the Miele coffee system sleek and beautiful, it comes with all of the features you’ll need for the perfect cup of joe. Whether you take your coffee black or insist on your morning latte, Miele’s built-in systems come with all of the best features, including an easy-click milk system. The milk is key for presentation, taste and body.  Check out the milk frothing feature — each unit has a different solution, so be sure you try this out before you buy.

Do you like a large latte, but your spouse needs an extra strong Ristretto? Make sure your unit is programmable for individual users so you can save your favorite brew – or 2. This Miele unit has up to 10 user profiles, so everyone in your family gets their favorite drink on demand!

Gaggenau

The best part of this built-in coffee maker are the many water features.  Not only does this beautiful system have 4 different water hardness settings, it also has the option to select 12 different water levels.

Many of the higher-end makers have large reservoirs (including this Gaggenau, with its 1.9 quart water tank), so you can go longer between fill-ups, but our favorite feature is the plumbed-in water line, so you don’t have to add water as you go.

Wolf

While you may think you need to go with a countertop model to save space, many of the built-ins fit the space of a full size microwave. If an impeccable latte is high on your must-have list, think about swapping out the micro. This Wolf unit doesn’t require any extra plumbing, which means it can really go anywhere in your kitchen.

Even if you couldn’t think of drinking anything other than a fully loaded cup of joe, you may well have a guest who prefers decaf. Be sure to check if you can switch out the beans or use pre-ground beans in your preferred brew to make everyone happy. This system has five different strength settings, so you know you’ll get the exact flavor you want.

Pro Tip: Try cleaning it BEFORE you buy it! With all the fancy bells and whistles, it’s easy to overlook maintenance. Make sure you fully understand the cleaning requirements of the unit. Do a test run!
